Choose forgiving projects
Shop stools, simple shelves, planters, boxes, and basic benches can teach layout and assembly while leaving room to recover from small errors.
Limit new techniques
A project becomes harder quickly when every step is unfamiliar. Choose a build with one or two new skills rather than six. You will learn more because you can tell which operation caused a problem.

A modest completed build teaches more than an ambitious half finished one. Pick something useful enough that you want to see it through sanding and finish.
