Woodworking Plan Checklist: 12 Things to Verify Before Building
Run through these checks before buying lumber or committing to a complicated plan.
Project basics
Confirm finished width, depth, and height. Decide where the project will live and whether doors, drawers, lids, or moving parts have enough clearance.
Parts and dimensions
Match the cut list to the drawings. Check repeated parts, critical fits, and any dimension that depends on actual material thickness.
Materials and hardware
Estimate lumber and sheet goods with waste in mind. Identify specialty hardware early. Confirm that the sizes in the plan are available where you shop.
Tools and operations
List the operations required to build the project. Make sure you have a safe method for each one, including large cuts, curves, joinery, drilling, and clamping.
Assembly
Read the sequence before cutting. Identify subassemblies, dry fits, glue ups, squaring steps, and surfaces that should be sanded or finished before final assembly.
Final check
Mark anything you changed. Keep the revised dimensions together. When the project itself differs from the drawing, measure from the work whenever that is the more reliable reference.
