Woodworking Materials Lists: What to Check Before the Lumber Run
A materials list should prevent a second trip to the store, but only if you translate it into the material your project and suppliers actually require.
Separate lumber from finished parts
A project may need six finished rails, but that does not mean you buy six boards. Plan how parts will come out of available board widths and lengths, then allow for defects and milling.
Check nominal and actual sizes
Construction lumber names do not equal finished dimensions. Sheet goods can also vary from their nominal thickness. Measure material when joinery depends on the real thickness.
List hardware precisely
Write down hinge type, screw length, drawer slide size, fasteners, knobs, brackets, and other hardware before shopping. A vague note like hinges can create another trip.
Include consumables
Glue, sandpaper, finish, rags, brushes, blades, and bits may not appear in a basic materials list. Check what the project consumes as well as what becomes part of the finished piece.

The materials list tells you what kind of stock you need. The cut list tells you the sizes and quantities that stock must yield. Use them together.
